The evening will commence with drinks, canapes and a welcome from Dr Gene Sherman AM. A discussion hosted by Dr Geremie Barmé, director of the Australian Centre on China in the World, ANU, will follow with filmmakers Anna Broinowski and Nick Torrens. Both Anna and Nick have made documentaries in totalitarian regimes - Nick has made many documentaries in China and has just completed his latest film China's 3 Dreams. Anna's most recent film Aim High In Creation was shot in North Korea.

The screening of the film will take place at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, 16-20 Goodhope Street, Paddington.

The evening is in support of the Documentary Australia Foundation (DAF), a unique non-profit that brings philanthropists and filmmakers together to create social change. DAF relies on private support and the funds raised at this event will go towards DAF’s national documentary screening program.

About the film: Ai Weiwei is China's most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. Against a backdrop of strict censorship, Ai expresses himself and organises people through art and social media. In response, Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, beat him up, bulldozed his newly built studio, and held him in secret detention.  This detailed portrait provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures.

Tickets are $50 per person which includes supper and drinks. Please see below to purchase your tickets.

Documentary Australia Foundation is grateful to Dr Gene Sherman AM and the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation for generously supporting this event. We also thank Dr Geremie Barmé, Anna Broinowski, Nick Torrens and Madman for their support.

We hope you can join us for this very special event.
